if the tenant owes us more than $10,000, should we still do it in the small claims? And if the amount has exceeded the security deposit, how do we recover it?

If the amount exceeds the small claims court limits, then it's probably financially worth it to just pursue it in a small claims court action, avoid the attorney's fees and avoid the costs of a superior court action. Does that tenant have any assets and are they even worth going after or spending a bunch of money to go after in a collection lawsuit?
