Spousal immigration status?

If a resident is a university student from another nation with a student visa that does not allow them to have employment, does that also preclude their spouse from having a job? Would it be possible in such a case for their spouse to get a job or to work in a W-9 position?

Now, I'm not too sure how that might work. I think it might be possible that would say look up the immigration and work status laws. I'm not too familiar with those myself, to be honest. But I want to say it would be possible, but it's definitely worth looking into just to make sure that that all adds up, right?
